Planning, Sorting Out the Confusion


Wow, amazing stuff. Hi, everyone. I’m very happy to talk to you again today, and today I’m going to talk to you about strategic planning, what is it? What is the difference between strategy, tactical, operational, projects, targets, to-do list, what is the difference? Think about it. What is strategy? Can you actually define what is strategy?


Most of the people tell me, when I ask them, “What is a strategy data?” “Well, you know, that’s a long term something plan.” And I say, “What is the difference between a strategy and tactical plan?” And they say, “Well, tactical plan is a strategy and…” “Okay, so what is a operational plan?” And this is a confusion.


And when do you write a strategy? When do you write an operational plan? How does it work? Well, let’s organize it. So, it’s very simple, actually. A strategy, you write only in two conditions. You have a problem that you want to solve, or you have a goal you want to achieve. That’s the only two reasons why you would write a strategy.


But in order to resolve a problem, or to achieve a goal, you need to find out what’s the reason for the problem, or why the reason that you’re not at the goal, what’s stopping you from being there. And before you find this reason, you will not be able to write a logical strategy. You’ll be able to guess, you’ll be able to come up with some kind of plan, but not a plan that 100%, no question, will lead you to success.


Well, a strategy actually is a series of steps that come to implement a reason for a problem, or implement the solution for a problem, based on the reason, or for your goal. If you don’t understand that, you will not create a strategy, you’ll create a wishful thinking based planning. And that, and that’s, never works. Strategy usually is set up in terms, in long terms. In terms of years, a big thing, it’s a strategy.


Now, strategies composed from different steps. To execute one step of a strategy, you’ll create a series of steps, to execute that one step. This series of steps is a tactical plan. So a tactical plan is a series of steps that when completed will accomplish one step of a strategy. So if a strategy have five steps, you’ll have five tactical plans


It’s a lesser gradient plan, and it is series of steps, usually medium terms, that when executed, will accomplish one step of a strategy. Now operational plans is series of steps, shorter terms, usually in terms of weeks, that come to accomplish one step of a tactical plan. So, a strategic plan, a step in it get broken down to tactical plans. A step in the tactical plan get broken down into operational plan, and then you have to, and this gradient can continue.


To mini-operations, projects, mini-projects, etc. What is to-do list? To do list is, most of the people thing is what you need to do today. If this is what you will think, you will be very busy doing all kind of thing you need to do today, and you will not progress, and you will find yourself 30, 40, 50, 60 years old and you will say, where is all, where all the time gone? Why I didn’t achieve what I wanted to achieve?


The reason is very simple. To do list is actually series of steps, short terms, in terms of hours, that come to accomplish, or to forward one step of a strategic plan. And if you don’t understand that, and if you don’t operate from that viewpoint, I’m going to do today only those things that will forward my strategy, you will not progress.


Of course it means that you need to have a strategy, written, not talked. Written. It means you need to have a tactical plans, operational plan, etc. And it means that those plans have to be broken down to the level of what am I going to do tomorrow at 03:00? If you don’t have that, you’ll be busy, extremely busy, not much of a forward progress. Thank you.
